United States Patent Office grants
allowance for IMET Corporation’s Smart Gun Technology
Newtown, PA – The United States Patent Office granted
an allowance for a utility patent on IMET Corporation’s innovative
smart gun technology invented by IMET President, Joseph Petrella
Jr. Known internally as the Personal Firearm Interlock (PFI), the
technology provides a simple mechanical solution to the smart gun
problem.
The following definition is found in the National
Institute of Justice "Smart Gun Solicitation,"
http://www.ncjrs.org/txtfiles1/nij/slsmartgun.txt:
A "smart gun" is defined as a handgun
that operates in a normal manner for authorized law enforcement
users, but disables itself when in the possession of an unauthorized
user.
A 1994 FBI review showed that during a ten-year
period, one of every six police officers killed in the line
of duty was disarmed by a suspect and shot with the stolen gun.

The Justice Department funded Sandia National
Labs to study this problem and identify police requirements
in, and existing technologies suitable for, a "smart gun."
Out of 14 concepts studied, Sandia determined radio frequency
(RF) technology as best suited and most readily available.

IMET Corporation’s PFI meets the National Institute
of Justice’s definition of a smart gun and does not rely on
any electrical components, making the system much more reliable
than current competing systems. The lack of electronic components
also makes the PFI immune to radio frequency jamming and power
supply requirements (batteries). Unlike keys or tumbler locks
already available on the firearm market, the PFI is completely
passive to the user and operates while the user grips and readies
the firearm. No additional skill sets are required to be learned
by the user to function the firearm.
IMET Corporation plans to use the patent to
establish licenses with firearm manufactures and law enforcement
agencies. Inquiries can be made to imet@imetcorporation.com
